Super Bowl LV is now in the books, with Tampa Bay easily taking care of Kansas City 31-9, and we can officially turn our attention to the NFL off-season calendar, which really ramps up in about a month when Free Agency begins March 15th. There should be plenty to entertain our imaginations before then with a bevy of quarterbacks rumored to be on the move - hottest current names being Carson Wentz, Derek Carr, Sam Darnold and Kirk Cousins. And, of course, there's the on-going DeShaun Watson saga in Houston. Plenty of rumors and potential storylines churning in the league so let's mock up our 2nd Edition!
1 jacksonville jaguars
trevor lawrence, qb, clemson
The question isn't who the Jaguars will take number one anymore but rather can Trevor Lawrence and new head coach Urban Meyer turn this organization around and have Jacksonville become a destination - not only to free agents and fans but for lifting Lombardi trophies.
2 new york jets
zach wilson, qb, byu
The prevailing wisdom of late seems to favor the Jets selecting a quarterback at two and finding a new home for the incumbent Sam Darnold (I happen to think Indianapolis will ultimately be that new home). Wilson appears to have a higher ceiling, more upside than Darnold (and perhaps of any other QB left on the draft board) and the allure of hitting a home run may simply be too great to pass up on for the Jets as they move forward with new head coach, Robert Saleh.
3 miami dolphins
penei sewell, ot, oregon
Calvin Johnson and Julio Jones just simply aren't in this draft class and when you have a top-tier, elite left tackle at the very top, you have to take them. Protecting Tua needs to be priority one for the Dolphins moving forward and giving him the best chance to succeed.
4 atlanta falcons
micah parsons, lb, penn state
Atlanta is a bit of an enigma as of now, in terms of which way they could go with the number 4 pick. A lot of early mocks and experts have them taking a quarterback to either groom behind or just replace Matt Ryan with. But all of the information out of Atlanta right now is pointing toward newly hired head coach Arthur Smith re-tooling the Falcons offense WITH Matt Ryan, not without, and Atlanta drafting the best player available - and that very well could be Parsons, who could also give them so much needed pass rush help.
5 carolina panthers
via TRADE with Cincinnati Bengals
justin fields, qb, ohio state
Carolina seems to be hellbent on upgrading their quarterback situation and will likely be rumored to be in on any deal with some of the veterans who may be on the move. I like the move up here and solidifying one of the top 3 in this draft class while holding onto Bridgewater to help reign in the young Fields.
6 philadelphia eagles
kyle pitts, te, florida
Since I do have the Eagles eventually parting ways with Carson Wentz in this mock (to the Bears), this pick could easily be a QB but I think Philadelphia will hold out and see what they have with Jalen Hurts. And with that in mind, I like the freakishly gifted TE Pitts here at 6.
7 detroit lions
ja'marr chase, wr, lsu
If Detroit is going to have success with Goff, they'll need to find him some help - enter Chase, WR1 in this draft class.
8 cincinnati bengals
via TRADE with Carolina Panthers
rashawn slater, ot/g, northwestern
The Bengals lose out on Sewell but are able to move down a few spots and take Slater to help bolster their offensive line while garnering some extra picks to continue to build around Burrow. They had luck last year finding a Day 2 receiver, no need to bypass the glaring need along the trenches.
9 denver broncos
Jeremiah owusu-koramoah, lb, notre dame
Last time the Broncos took a linebacker fresh off a Butkus Award winning season was - Von Miller. That worked out pretty good. JOK is a perfect speedy LB in today's changing league.
10 dallas cowboys
christian barmore, dt, alabama
Yes, the top two cornerbacks are on the board but if Dallas can't improve their defensive line, I'm not sure it matters who they have at corner. Barmore is head and shoulders above anyone else in this class at interior defensive line.
11 new york giants
Devonta smith, wr, alabama
When Giants GM Dave Gettleman laid out his team's 2021 off-season objectives in January, he made things very clear. "At the end of the day, we need to find playmakers. On offense, it's playmakers." He accomplishes that picking Smith here.
12 san francisco 49ers
caleb farley, cb, virginia tech
I could see San Fran going a number of directions here at 12, there's some thought that they could elect to take a QB here to groom - and they've kicked the tires on trading for a vet too, Cousins notably. They could continue to add to their defensive front but I like corner here and they get their pick, taking the first one off the board.
13 los angeles chargers
christian barrisaw, ot, virginia tech
Last year, the Chargers found their future franchise QB in Justin Herbert and now the challenge will be to protect him and build around him. Barrisaw is the best tackle on the board. Don't overthink it.
14 pittsburgh steelers
via TRADE with Minnesota Vikings
trey lance, qb, north dakota state
If you want your future QB, you don't sit back and hope he falls to you - you trade up and get him. Big Ben may have one more season left in the league and that will allow the inexperienced Lance some time to learn and grow in Pittsburgh.
15 New england patriots
jaylen waddle, wr, alabama
The Patriots may very well have the league's worst receiver corps and regardless who ends up under center next season, they'll need more firepower for them. Waddle has plenty of firepower.
16 arizona cardinals
patrick surtain, cb, alabama
The Cardinals will have a decision to make on free agent Peterson this off-season and even if they do keep him, I could still see this pick being a corner - and you have to love the value of Surtain at 16.
17 las vegas raiders
zaven collins, lb, tulsa
The Raiders are incredibly tough to mock for but I think Collins checks a lot of boxes. The guy just looks like a Raider. He's big, fast, mean and he will provide a boast to the Raiders' pass rush.
18 miami dolphins
kwity paye, edge, michigan
If one of the top 3 receivers fall to 18, I could see Miami going that direction but there will be some options there on Day 2 if not. I think Paye is just too much value here to pass up. Keep improving those lines.
19 washington football team
nick bolton, lb, missouri
Washington could easily take a QB here, probably Mac Jones if they do, or they may try to trade this pick for a veteran QB. I like Bolton here. I'm not convinced Jones is going to be enough of an upgrade of what they have and they need a middle linebacker. Rivera will love Bolton.
20 philadelphia eagles
via TRADE with Chicago Bears
jaycee horn, cb, south carolina
Are the Eagles serious about trading Carson Wentz? Will they be able to get a first round pick for him? Maybe. I do think the Bears are desperate enough to jump at the chance to revitalize Wentz's career and if it takes number 20 here, then so be it. In Horn, the Eagles will give their secondary some much needed help.
21 indianapolis colts
Alija-vera tucker, ot/g, usc
The Colts are another team that will likely be rumored to be in on a various number of QB's this off-season and I believe they will pry Sam Darnold away from the Jets - but not for this pick. Instead, the Colts can try to fill the void left by retiring Anthony Castonzo.
22 tennessee titans
kadarius toney, wr, florida
Toney should provide the Titans with some much needed juice in their receiving corps and they also may lose Corey Davis this off-season.
23 new york jets
azeez ojulari, edge, georgia
The late run on edge rusher will begin here with the Jets as new hire Robert Saleh will try to put together pieces for his defense in New York.
24 minnesota vikings
greg rousseau, edge, miami
The Vikings trade down from 14 to 24 and still get their man in Rousseau. It's funny how the board plays out sometimes.
25 jacksonville jaguars
ifeatu melifonwu, cb, syracuse
After selecting his future franchise QB at number one, Urban Meyer will turn to his defense at 25 and take a corner to match with last year's first rounder Henderson. Good things are coming in Jacksonville.
26 cleveland browns
jayson oweh, edge, penn state
Cleveland did a marvelous job last off-season in re-tooling their offense and it paid off big time with a trip to the post season. Now they add another edge rusher to pit opposite of Myles Garrett.
27 baltimore ravens
carlos basham jr, edge, wake forest
Basham just sounds like the name of a Raven defender, doesn't it? Basham is a riser right now on draft boards and Baltimore wastes no time in filling a need and not waiting until Day 2.
28 new orleans saints
tyson campbell, cb, georgia
New Orleans appears set to roll with Winston and Hill at QB next season, with Brees set to retire, so I don't foresee them being in play for Mac Jones here - instead they make a play to add a talented corner to their secondary.
29 green bay packers
teven jenkins, ot, oklahoma state
Yet again, Green Bay will pass on a Day 1 receiver. However, Jenkins will provide some relief for Rodgers unlike last year's first round pick.
30 buffalo bills
jaelan phillips, edge, miami
Phillips has some off the field flags that may have him ending up as a Day 2 but the talent is first round, no doubt. And here with Buffalo, you have a coach and locker room that can help the young man grow and make the most of his ability.
31 kansas city chiefs
jalen mayfield, ot/g, michigan
It's almost too easy to have KC going OL after that Super Bowl, no? Maybe so.. but.. I mean.. you watched the Super Bowl, right?
32 tampa bay bucs
mac jones, qb, alabama
What a perfect spot for Jones to be drafted. Everyone knows Brady will be the starter next season, so there's no pressure to play right away. He can sit and learn from perhaps the greatest QB ever. And taking him in the first gives you the extra contract year option.
